From the Vantage point of a Square…
In the world of Pimping and Hoeing…all of the people who live in the legal world are labeled as Squares. Squares are law abiding citizens, and are usually completely ignorant and oblivious to the ways of the streets. They don’t live in the underworld (but some squares do purchase the services of these prostitutes). You and I are considered as squares. And let me be clear,
I’ve never desired, nor do I desire to ever participate in the lifestyle. I’m a square!
That world is also known as The Game or the The Life (Lifestyle). Or the P Game (the Pimp Game). There are other terms for this lifestyle. And before I was able to grasp the knowledge that could help me in my life, I had to understand the characters, rules and regulations in that lifestyle, so that I wouldn’t get confused as I read books or had conversations with people who were once in that lifestyle. It is literally another world. So I’m going to give you a quick explanation of the lifestyle from my study to bring you up to speed. This is important, because a lot of what I will teach, will come from this area of knowledge. Remember, this is a quick summary …the game usually takes a long time to understand and digest.
Pimping and Hoeing is one of the subcultures of Black America…
As a nation, America is very unusual. Why is it unusual? Well, many nations usually contain the same racial and cultural stock. Because they are the same as a people, there is a common culture and there tends to be no racism. China is full of the same racial stock. India for the most part is full of the same racial stock. The middle eastern countries are full of the same racial stock. What makes countries like the Untied States different is that they have different racial stocks living together in one country. And because this country has so many different racial stocks, there tends to be some racial tension in this nation.
Like other countries, America has a culture. But, in America, since there are many other cultures, we tend to have subcultures in America. The Native Americans are a subculture of America. The Latin Americans are another subculture in this country. The Koreans are another subculture in this country. The Chinese are another Subculture in this country. The Middle Eastern communities are another subculture in this country. The Italian community is a subculture in this country. The Albanians are another subculture in this country. The Indians from India are another subculture in this country. The Mormons are another subculture in this country. The Amish community is another Subculture in this country. And so forth and so on, we have so many subcultures in this country. They have their own foods and even in some towns, their own areas like Little China, Little Italy, Little Haiti, etc. etc.
And the Black Community is also a subculture in this country. Within the black community, there are other subcultures within the community. You have the African American Community, the African Community, the Jamaican community, The Haitian Community, and many other communities in the black community.
Well, in the black community, the underworld is also a subculture in this community. The underworld is also a subculture in the Italian community, Russian Community, Latin community, Albanian community, Asian Communities and other communities in this country. This subculture is even in the white community in this country (i.e. the historic ‘Dixie Mafia’). Now keep in mind, all of the squares (legal citizens) in those communities have never accepted this part of their community.
In the subcommunity of the underworld in the black community, there is another subculture, and that subculture is pimping and hoeing. Prostitution is in every underworld of all races. But as you will see, in the black American Community it is completely different from all of the races and countries. Every segment of the underworld has common rules at the core…but in general from my observations, there are different rules in each of those subcultures.
How Pimping and hoeing started in the black community…
Prostitution has been going on for thousands of years all over the planet. Women have been selling sex for an eternity. It is said that even Mary Magdalene in the Bible was a whore. If you watch the old cowboy films of the west, in America, you’d regularly see brothels. This is a part of American history from the east coast to the west. So prostitution was always around. What I’ve heard my mentor and other pimps say, is that during slavery, since the slave master was having his way with black women and black men couldn’t do anything about it because by law they were considered livestock and not humans, black women began to manipulate the situation to better her and her families situation. After they were freed, since blacks generally had nothing, some in the community decided to come to together to get something together. The hoes created the pimps…pimps didn’t create the hoes. Hoes have been here for thousands of years and if every pimp dies, there will still be some hoes hoeing.
And over the years, this evolved into a segment of the underworld in the black American community.
(The Characters…)
There are many players to this lifestyle, but there are three major characters.
1)The Pimp is always a man. The dictionary, and even pimps define a pimp as someone who receives the earnings from a woman that sells sex or the illusion of sex. Another term for a pimp is a Gentleman of Leisure. Traditionally speaking, a pimp was a gentleman…a renaissance man. He is a sophisticated man. He was a master orator. And his business was women. And since his business was women, he had a higher than normal knowledge on the nature of women. A pimp usually presides over several women at one time. The group of women is referred to as his Stable. He’s so adept to the nature of women, that he can preside over a group of women and maintain peace, while the typical man can’t even maintain peace with one woman.
There are levels to anything in life. And just like life, there are levels to even pimps. In his book, The Pimps Bible: The Sweet Science of Sin, Alfred Gholson counts about 52 different types of pimps. But to keep it simple, there a two distinct polar opposite levels in the lifestyle, the Gorilla Pimp vs the King Pimp.
The Gorilla Pimp fits the typical stereotype that we all assume a pimp is. He is the type who uses physical or intellectual brute force to deal with his women. He will beat a woman if he has to. He is the type that waits at the bus stations for the runaways and manipulates them into the lifestyle. And if she attempts to leave the game, he might even track her down and bring her back to the game. Iceberg Slim is a famous author in this genre. Iceberg Slim’s books are filled with examples of this type of pimp. In one of his books, he even beats one of his women with a coat hanger. They are manipulative and tend to be deceitful. They don’t love those women…she’s just a tool for his material goals in life.
One of my coworkers, unknowingly married a guy who turned out to be a gorilla pimp. She eventually found out that he was picking up girls from the greyhound station and pulling them into the lifestyle. He intimidated women and even introduced them to drugs. When my coworker left him, he finally beat her up and tried to kill her. When she told me about him, I automatically understood what he was-a gorilla! Not all Gorillas are that horrible…but they don’t have a problem with physically abusing their women to keep them in line. Many of them also don’t have a problem with keeping their women on drugs.
The King Pimp generally is the complete opposite of the Gorilla pimp. He is the embodiment of the lifestyle. He is a gentleman of leisure to the fullest. He is the master orator. He pimps with his mind, not with his hands. He believes that when a pimp has to physically put hands on a woman to do something, his wisdom has run out. His Game (knowledge of the lifestyle and human nature) is so thorough, he doesn’t have to put hands on a woman. He is the top of the pyramid of Pimps. Where as (in my opinion), the Gorilla is the lowest level of the game. They give the game a bad name.
A Pimp not only has prostitutes in his stable. He can also have women in his stable that are bad-check writers. He could also have boosters in his stable. He can have women who are thieves in his business. Many times when a woman gets too old or is tired of being a sex worker, she may decide to learn another skill .
2)The Prostitute is a woman that sells sex or the illusion of sex. Another term for a prostitute is a Hoe and what she does for a living is called hoeing. The term whore may also be used do define her. Another term for sex would be Flat backing. She’s also known as a working girl, call girl, courtesan, lady-of-the-night, street walker, hooker, etc.
Based on that definition, many pimps have considered strippers as hoes. They may even consider porn stars and models who pose naked in magazines as hoes. They even consider escorts as hoes. Why do they consider these women as hoes? Because they either sell sex or the illusion of sex. So anyone in the sex industry can be considered a hoe because they are either selling sex or selling the illusion of sex.
A hoe is a manipulator of men who purchase sex from her. But what she can extract from a customer, is only based on what a pimp has taught her or what she has previously learned of the game. It has nothing to do with how attractive she is. If he has no knowledge, she may be charging too small a price for her services. But if she has been taught by a master, she could charge as high as one thousand dollars an hour. The women I saw on Biscayne boulevard, were charging bottom basement prices, thus letting me know that their pimp was low level. It’s all according to her training.
3)The Trick is the one that funds the whole game. He is the person that pays for sex (or the illusion of sex) from the prostitute. Another term for a trick is a John. To the world of Hoeing and Pimping, the trick is the ATM machine. He is to be manipulated for every penny he has, if she is highly skilled. The trick tends to be a square. Other men in the underworld can use her services also. But it is usually the square who leaves the confines of his home…thus leaving his wife and children to go purchase some sex!
4)Bottom Woman tends to be the manager of the other women in the stable of women of the pimp. She is usually the most experienced , she usually helps to train the women to the lifestyle and helps to keep order.
5)Game has several meanings in the Pimp Game. First of all it is used to refer to the lifestyle (Pimping). It could also be used to refer to other parts of the underworld (i.e. the drug game, the con game, etc.). Game is also used to refer to knowledge. Specifically, knowledge on the lifestyle or other aspects of the underworld. My mentor’s father said that game is, “Knowledge with a flair”!
6)Turnout is used to refer to the date of the initiation of coming into the lifestyle. A Pimp has a “turnout” as well as a prostitute. A pimp may say,” I got turned out into the game, 5 years ago.” It could also refer to a new woman in the lifestyle.
A Pimp and Hoe Need Each Other
Now from my observation, here is the main difference between pimping and hoeing in the black community, compared to all of the other communities and other nations. From here on, I am only talking about the black American “Pimping and Hoeing” experience.
Who can love a Hoe? Only a Pimp can. In the game, all of the women in his stable are his women…his wives. I need you to process this. It took me a long time to accept this and digest it. I repeat, in the game, all of the women in a Pimp’s stable are his women…his wives! In the game, to the hoes, the Pimp is their man. Once he comes into the lifestyle, he must condition himself to accept the fact that she will sleep with other men and it’s alright. In the game, they both have learned to love each other above sex. Sex is just a means to an end. No square could ever accept this. I (and most squares) could NEVER accept this, that’s why I could never be fit to enter the game. That’s why you could never enter the game. He (the pimp) knows that she sleeps with many men for a living, and he loves her and is intimate with her regardless of this. Even in the game, many have had children with these women. When she’s in the street, she’s a working girl, when she’s at home she’s his woman doing wifely things. They have entered into the game to have something together.
Prostitutions is not human trafficking…
And that’s the difference that I see from prostitution in other cultures and nationalities compared to the black community in the U.S. The women are forced into the lifestyle in these other cultures. Many are kidnapped and forced into the lifestyle. Many girls are being snatched off the streets in America today, and many are being sold all over the world, as sex slaves. Those circumstances are not relationships. They are in a situation that they don’t want to be in.
I’ve seen documentaries on prostitution concerning the cartels, gangbangers, the Asian gangs, Russian Mafia, etc. etc. And they are never relationship orientated. The women are just cattle. They find it difficult to get out of the situation, and if they run, they may get severely beaten or killed. The game (in the black American community) was never meant to be like that. But in the black community, you do have some people that operate like this. That’s not what the game was originally about. They Pimp by force. In the game, the woman must choose.
In the Game she must choose…
Generally speaking, a Pimp will approach a woman who is already in the lifestyle (or not in the lifestyle-A Square), and have a conversation with her on why she should be with him in the lifestyle. The woman eventually has to make a choice to become his woman in the game. After she agrees to it, she has to pay this Pimp a Choosing Fee. A Choosing Fee is a certain amount of money that she must pay him if she desires to come into his life as his woman. Paying this fee stops the wasting of time from indecisive women. This fee shows the society that she’s serious about being with him. If she decides to leave him and go to another Pimp, she must pay the new Pimp a choosing fee. how much is a typical choosing fee? Well, it varies. It really depends on the reputation of this Pimp and what he’s willing to accept. I’ve heard of fees from $5,000 to $10,000. Some little Pimps might charge smaller amounts. Some Pimps may even charge larger prices! It just depends on what he’s willing to accept.
When she pays the new pimp his choosing fee, he must now contact or call the Pimp that she just left to inform him that she is now with him. Her ex must accept this, and generally let him come over to get her things, shake his hand and let them go. If he cannot be nonviolent after receiving this news, he proves that he’s unfit to be in that world and may be ostracized from it.
So as you can see, the difference between the game in the black community, compared to the prostitution in different communities, nationalities and countries is that the women have a choice. She chooses where she wants to be. She builds a relationship with this type of man, who can love her above what she’s doing in the street. They love each other above sex. He’s the only man that can love her. Most of the time, a Square can’t love a hoe. In the other societies, they are just flesh…property.
